Marlboro, NJ History

The New Jersey State legislature created Marlboro on February 17, 1848. Before this it had been part of Freehold Township since the time of the earliest European settlements in the seventeenth century.

Marlboro has largely been a rural community until recently, consisting of rich farmland and active commercial hubs.

The area is named for marl, a fossilized remnant of prehistoric sea life discovered in nearby fields during the 1760’s. The mineral rich substance was utilized by farmers to improve soil quality and enjoyed high demand in the days before commercial fertilizers. The trade of marl was propelled by proximity to nearby sea ports and commercial centers to the status of a top industry.

MarlboroMarlboro incorporated in 1868 and doubled in size over the next decade. It had been the site of many famous skirmishes during the Revolutionary War between British and Colonial soldiers.

Following World War II, New Jersey was supported by the Federal Government to extend, expand, and improve local infrastructure. Arterial roadways began to fan out, connecting the agricultural settlement of Marlboro to nearby cities including New York City and even Philadelphia.

This shift gradually transformed the area from a rural to a suburban community as its population continued to boom into the late 20th Century!

Today, Marlboro is known for its warm citizenry, award winning schools, economic prominence, and its incredible historical narrative!
