Manalapan, NJ Area Guide

Welcome to the township of Manalapan, New Jersey! Located just fifteen minutes from the beaches of Jersey Shore and less than one hour from the “capital of the world”, Manalapan offers untold opportunity while still ensuring its residents a suburban safe-haven!

Manalapan, NJ History

ManalapanThe unique municipality of Manalapan traces its origins to the mid-nineteenth century when citizens of the western portion of Freehold Township were informed by the State Legislature they would become members of a brand new township.

Years earlier, during the Revolutionary War, it had been the site of an epic clash between thirty-thousand British and Continental troops in 1778 at the Battle of Monmouth.

The name for Manalapan most likely derives from the Lenape Indian words “manel” for drinking, and “paune” for bread, perhaps indicating the area as an ideal place to settle.

This new township contained roughly thirty square miles of astoundingly beautiful farmland. The population according to the census of 1850 hovered just below two-thousand people.

These early residents enjoyed bountiful harvests of grains and vegetables, and over time the area became renowned for its incredible agricultural yields. Saw mills, carpenters, blacksmiths, and distilleries rounded out the town’s activities. These commercial businesses were furthered in importance by nearby shipping yards and seaports.

During the Civil War, Manalapan became an important training camp named Camp Vredenbergh on the original site of the Battle of Monmouth.

In 1888, the people of Manalapan opted to form a separate local government from Englishtown and subsequently elected their own local officials. At this point, the township became its own borough and moved its government offices.

The town has continued to grow in the intervening years and is currently enjoying rapid development as real-estate specialists have identified the enormous merit and potential of the conveniently located suburbia.
